Why does the USA consider itself above international law?

Whether it's carrying out illegal invasions (Iraq), shooting down civil aircraft (IranAir 655), imprisoning minors after illegally abducting them (Omar Khadr), carrying out illegal bombing campaigns (Operation Menu over Cambodia), the US government seems to regard itself as being above the law. And still they wonder why they are so universally detested?
