What holds the Shuttle to the launch pad?

The Apollo rockets had around 6 arms that were attached to the rocket vertically and released upon take-off. What holds the space shuttle on the pad? The only thing I've found were 8 nut/bots attached to the SRB's. Is this the only thing holding the shuttle vertical before it launches?
